What Is Babbletype?

What is babbletype

Let's start with the basics, what is babbletype?

Babbletype is an online transcription agency that allows users to look for transcription jobs from home. The company was founded in 1992 by John Fieldcamp and Angela Wood. It's also based in Philadelphia, USA.

Okay, I know what you are thinking, transcription is not so hard. Actually, it's just writing down verbal words into paper so it shouldn't be that difficult right?

While this may seem like the easiest job, listening to an audio file and writing it down into written format could be hard for some people accomplish because sometimes the words are so muffled and you could barely understand the words.

In short, this kind of job is not for everyone but there are some people who manage to do this with ease so it could also be a good source of income.

The truth is, there could be a lot of technicalities behind this job and certain abilities that you need to have in order to be successful. A typical transcription job will pay you $30 an hour but this usually comes with a certain requirement.

If you think you can manage transcribing a few audio files, then this might work out for you and you can work from the comforts of your own home, but first you need to know how to get qualified first.

The good thing is, transcribers are in high demand and even if you are a newbie there will be a lot of jobs available.

How Does Babbletype Work?

So, let's get down to business.. How does it work?

Babbletype works with a lot of different business and companies that outsource audio format for transcriptionists to write into files. your job as a transcriber will be to professionally edit it and turn them into well written documents.

This sort of job could be stready and can pay you good money if you get the job done right.

On the other hand, with Babbletype there are three available options for work on the website which include:

  • Transcription
  • Translation
  • Proof reading

Let's discuss each more in detail:

Transcription

As i've mentioned, transcription means that you will have to take certain audio files and transform them into well written documents, presentations, and other files that the company might need and require you to do.

These file types could be interviews, movie scripts, and other kind of files. This job might seem easy but it could get tedious if you do not have the right software or the right tools to do it quickly.

Most companies will require that you transcribe the files word per word, so that means you will have to put time stamps and people's name in the file.

Unless the company requires you to do so, then listening to the file and writing everything down should be easy as long as you have the ears and the right tools to listen carefully.

Translation

Translation means taking an audio or video file and translating into the required language that the client needs. For you to be successful with this, you'll need to be bilingual and fluent because it's required on Babbletype.

This job requires 4 skills which include:

  • Listening
  • Writing
  • Reading
  • Proper Communication

Proof Reading

This one is pretty straight forward, when you say proof reading - that means taking a document and editing everything into perfectly written and gramatically correct documents.

I know, seeing all of these requirements and the kind of work you will be doing may seem overwhelming but if you have all of these skills, then it shouldn't be hard for you to accomplish.

What Are The Payrates on Babbletype?

Since there are three main jobs that you can choose from, Babbletype will pay you based on the rates for each job.

Here's a more detailed idea of how much it pays:

So for English transcription, the payrate will be

  • $0.40 - 0.60 per minute on the audio depending on the type of audio you need to stranscribe
  • $0.45 per minute on the audio for verbatim transcription

For proofreading or quality assurance, the payrate will be:

  • English Proofreading - $0.13
  • English Proofreading from translated sources  - $0.18

For translation, the payrate will be:

  • Spanish to Portuguese translations - $1.30 per audio minute
  • All other languages - $1.40 per audio minute
  • Translation into Excel type - $1.60 per audio minute for all languages
  • Translation to quality reviews - $0.15

As you can see here the rates are not so bad, but this requires a great deal of work to do and certain skills. Payments are sent through paypal each week, which is the only payment method available on the site.

If you think about it paypal is okay, but if you don't have a paypal account this could be a problem because they don't offer any other payment methods.

To join Babbletype you'll need to be a certified transcriptionist or can speak different languages at a time to qualify for the site.

It's free to join and you do not need to pay for any monthly fees but you will be required to complete some requirements before you can start working officially.

If you are rather serious about making this a full time job, you will need to prove your worth as a transcriber by passing their test. When you sign up, you will be directed or sent an online test for you to complete before you can start working.

You will also need access to a fast computer and fast internet as well as have a good headset and a quiet environment to make transcribing easy for you.

What Are The Test Requirements on Babbletype?

So, let's talk about the requirements more in detail.

The application process for this kind of job is rather extensive so it's really not easy to get into it right away. Babbletype wants to ensure that all of their clients are given the best transcriptionists so they will also have to make sure that you are qualified for this job.

Also, I mentioned that you will need the following to make this easy:

  • a decent headset
  • high speed internet connection

Is Babbletype Accredited By The BBB?

As you can see, Babbletype is not accredited by the Better Business Bureau (BBB) yet.

Looking to see if the business is accredited is a great way to figure out how much you can trust the company based on their ratings and years they have been active.

it says here that Babbletype has been in business for 10 years already, but i find it a little concerning that they have been in business for that long without being accredited, so you might want to look up on this further.

What I Like About Babbletype / The Pros

1. You Can Work From Home

One of the many things i like about transcription is the fact that you can work from the comforts of your own home. No longer will you have to go through the hassle of waking up in the morning and traveling to the office.

With this sort of job, you can set your own pace and work peacefully.

2. You Can Set Your Own Working Hours

Another thing I like, is the fact that you can set your own working hours. In a normal job, you'll have to time in and out at a specific time, but with this one you can set your own time.

3. There's Unlimited Work

If you have days where you are running out of work, here you will have plenty of files to work on.

What I Dislike About Babbletype / The Cons

1. The Pay Is Not That Big

Although there's plenty of work available for you to complete, the pay is not that big unless you are a qualified translator. It will depend on how hard you work on this website that determines how much you make.

2. There's No Specialist Transcription Available

if you are already a season transcriptionist and you are looking for certain files that you want to work on, Babbletype does not offer specific jobs available for your expertise.

3. It's Only Good For Qualified Transcriptionists

if you are beginner, then this will not be the best platform for you to join. They have too many requirements and require certain skills. It would be recommended that you build your experience first before joining this site.

Is Babbletype a Scam?

Is Babbletype a scam? Based on the information we have discussed so far, no Babbletype is not a scam. Since the business has been in operation for more than 10 years then it's safe to say that they are not a scam.

Would I recommend it though? No! why? because it's really not the kind of job that could give you passive income and plus you need to have a certain skill set to join it.

If you want something that's better and will allow you to earn bigger money, then you should try affiliate marketing.

This business model is better and easier to get into compared to this one. Try it out!

How I Made Thousands Online In 1 Year?

Personally, I had a very bad experience with other online business models thus why I am not recommending them to anyone.

However, there is a business model I do recommend, and it's called affiliate marketing.

The reason why? let me tell you why.

  • You don't need to purchase any products to make money.
  • You don't need to recruit people to actually make money.
  • You can promote more than 1 product.

And the best thing is, it is completely FREE to get started with.

If you don't like it, no problem. But why wouldn't you try something that's RISK-FREE in the first place?

I was a manager at a phone shop while I was doing this as my side hustle, and now, I can work beside the infinity pool whenever I want . (but don't do that...sunburn xD)
